Thermal imager
The most versatile instrument in your toolbox!
Did you know that by having a thermal imager onboard your vessel, you can perform a number of inspections which contributes to increased safety for the people onboard, as well as more reliable and predictable operation of equipment? The use cases are many, but below we will briefly explain the most common use-case scenarios for ships.
Heated surfaces
Heated surfaces
Statistics show that most engine room fires are caused by a ruptured fuel pipe spraying oil onto a hot surface. Fires like these are of course very costly, but more importantly potentially dangerous for crew and passengers
onboard the vessel. Therefore you should be extra wary of the following anomalies:

- Surface temperatures over 220°C
- Surface temperatures between 200...220°C
SOLAS 2014 – Chapter II-2 – Regulation 4 (Probability of ignition) point 2.2.6 states that surfaces over 220°C which may be impinged as a result of a fuel system failure shall be properly insulated. In addition, precautions shall be taken to prevent, any oil that may escape under pressure from any pump, filter or heater, from coming into contact with heated surfaces.
With one of our suggested thermal imagers you don’t need to search for these heated surfaces. You simply just configure a color-alarm at the desired temperature limit, and any temperatures exceeding this limit will give you a clear and understandable visual alert on the screen.
Electrical faults
Many electrical faults are caused by too high transition resistance, often due to improper connections. This results in an elevated temperature in the point of connection, which decreases along the wire. This is relatively easy to detect with a thermal imager, provided it has a good thermal sensitivity. There can also be many other types of electrical faults, but common for all of them is that you can detect them by using a thermal imager.

Mechanical faults
Performing condition based maintenance on rotating equipment is often more economical and provides a higher operational reliability than interval-based maintenance. This allows you to plan maintenance during down-time and reduce the risk of unexpected stops. On rotating equipment you can use a few methods to detect faults before they become critical. Thermal inspections and measuring vibrations are two commonly used methods.

Higher vibration than normal gives you an indication that components may have to be replaced, and possibly need to be realigned. In addition these fautls also presents themselves with elevated temperatures which you can detect with thermal imagers. We can of course deliver solutions for both vibration measurement and thermal inspections. We can also deliver equipment for realigning rotating equipment to prolong the lifetime of bearings and other components.

Firefighting
A thermal imager can see through a smoke filled room to detect people, as well as potential hazards behind doors. This allows you to maneuver both swiftly and safely in these difficult conditions.

We recommend that you use a purpose built firefighting camera for this, which is readily available in case of emergencies. But if you have nothing else, a traditional thermal imager can serve as an emergency option, but keep in mind that it is not optimized like the purpose built cameras are. We can supply both firefighting and traditional thermal imagers.
